Founded in 1867 in Saint John N.B., by George L and William Barbour, Barbours is a family-owned business with a passion for producing and packaging high-quality food products, made from the best ingredients. In 1950 the Brenan family acquired the company and in 1966 production was moved to Sussex. Barbours has also been a long time supporter of the Agricultural Museum of New Brunswick through the sponsorship of special projects and donations.
The Agricultural Museum has acquired several Barbours items overs the years:
Vinegar pump
#017001002
Donor: Barbours

This wooden pump was used for extracting vinegar (or molasses or other liquids) from a large barrel.

Spice Box
#018999109
Donor: Sussex Farm Supplies

Spice Box
#022011007
Donor: Cathy Kelly
Barbours packages and bottles a large variety of spices, flavours and baking items such as extracts, baking powder, and peanut butter under their own label and for other companies.
At the museum, we have collected many examples of these products from the many years this New Brunswick business has operated. Especially since their move to Sussex!

King Cole Tea Box
#024010001
Donor: Debbie Armstrong

1/2 Pound of Loose Tea
#996104
Donor: Austin and Laura Stockdale
King Cole Tea, a Maritime favourite, was introduced on South Market Wharf in Saint John in 1910. In the 1940s tea bags became a convenient and reliable way to brew a cup of tea - and much less messy than dealing with loose tea.
Barbours still operates in Sussex to this day and offers many of the same products. Information on current offering can be found at: https://barbours.ca/
