Donor: Gordon Russell
Molasses was popular in New Brunswick because it was very cheap and versatile in the kitchen. Farmers bought molasses to mix into animal feed in the winter for added nutrition.
Feed grade molasses is a supplement that is commonly used to improve palatability and increase sugars in livestock, beef cattle, lactating dairy cows and dry dairy cows. Reasons why molasses is added to livestock feed include:
More digestible fiber
Less feed waste
High energy supplement
Growth performance improvement
Loaded with vital minerals and nutrients
We don’t know that the molasses in our barrel came from Crosby’s but it’s an easy assumption. Crosby's has been importing the world’s finest molasses to the East Coast of Canada since 1879; supplying retailers across Canada and into New England. Begun in NS by Lorenzo George Crosby, the company moved to Saint John, New Brunswick by 1897. Five generations later, Crosby Foods Limited continues to flourish as a small, independent, family-owned business.
